Find out how many days are left until the next Easter Sunday, Western or Orthodox, counting from today or any date you choose. You fill in these fields: Count from and Easter tradition. It shows days until Easter, date of Easter, and weeks and days.

  • Count from: A date. Starts as today's date. Change it to count from another day.
  • Easter tradition: Switch between: Western, Orthodox.

How to use

  1. Pick a date for "Count from".
  2. Choose Western or Orthodox for "Easter tradition".
  3. Read the result: days until Easter, date of Easter, and weeks and days. It appears once every required field has a valid value.

Worked examples

Example 1. Inputs:

  • Count from: June 15, 2025
  • Easter tradition: Western

Results:

  • Days until Easter: 294 days
  • Date of Easter: Sunday, April 5, 2026
  • Weeks and days: 42 weeks, 0 days

How this is worked out: Western Easter 2025 was 2025-04-20, already past, so the next is 2026-04-05. Day of year of 2025-06-15 = 31+28+31+30+31+15 = 166, so 365 - 166 = 199 days to Dec 31. Dec 31 to Apr 5 = 31+28+31+5 = 95. 199 + 95 = 294.

Example 2. Inputs:

  • Count from: April 1, 2026
  • Easter tradition: Western

Results:

  • Days until Easter: 4 days
  • Date of Easter: Sunday, April 5, 2026
  • Weeks and days: 0 weeks, 4 days

How this is worked out: Western Easter 2026 is 2026-04-05. April 5 - April 1 = 4 days.

Example 3. Inputs:

  • Count from: April 20, 2025
  • Easter tradition: Orthodox

Results:

  • Days until Easter: 0 days
  • Date of Easter: Sunday, April 20, 2025
  • Weeks and days: 0 weeks, 0 days
  • Note: Easter is on the day you picked, so there are 0 days to go.

How this is worked out: Orthodox Easter 2025 is 2025-04-20 (Wikipedia, List of dates for Easter; the same day as Western Easter that year), so the count from that day is 0.

Example 4. Inputs:

  • Count from: April 4, 2026
  • Easter tradition: Western

Results:

  • Days until Easter: 1 day
  • Date of Easter: Sunday, April 5, 2026
  • Weeks and days: 0 weeks, 1 day

How this is worked out: The day before Western Easter 2026 (April 5): 5 - 4 = 1 day.

Limitations

  • Works for dates from 1583 onward, when the Gregorian calendar rules for Easter begin.
  • Shows only the Western and Orthodox dates. Other local church calendars are not covered.
  • Counts whole calendar days and ignores time zones and the time of day.

FAQs

Q: Why are there two Easter dates?
A: Western churches use the Gregorian calendar to find Easter. Orthodox churches work Easter out on the Julian calendar, which gives a date that is often later. In some years, such as 2025, the two dates are the same. The Orthodox date is shown in the Gregorian calendar.
Q: What if the date I pick is Easter Sunday?
A: The tool shows 0 days and says so. It does not skip ahead to the following year.
Q: What if Easter has already passed this year?
A: It counts to Easter of the following year, in the tradition you chose.
Q: Can I count from a date other than today?
A: Yes. Change the Count from date. It starts as today's date.
Q: How is the date of Easter worked out?
A: Western Easter uses the standard Gregorian computus. Orthodox Easter uses the Julian computus, moved onto the Gregorian calendar.
