What this tool does
Count the days until the next September 1, with the weekday and full weeks. You fill in these fields: Count from. It shows days until September 1, next September 1, and weeks and days.
Inputs
- Count from: A date. Starts as today's date. Defaults to today. Change it to count from another day.
How to use
- Pick a date for "Count from".
- Read the result: days until September 1, next September 1, and weeks and days. It appears once every required field has a valid value.
Worked examples
Example 1. Inputs:
- Count from: October 8, 2026
Results:
- Days until September 1: 328 days
- Next September 1: Wednesday, September 1, 2027
- Weeks and days: 46 weeks, 6 days
How this is worked out: Oct 8 2026 is already past Sept 1 2026, so the next is Sept 1 2027. Oct 8 2026 to Oct 8 2027 is 365 days; Sept 1 to Oct 8 is 37 days (29 left in Sept + 8); 365 - 37 = 328. Sept 1 2026 is a Tuesday (Jan 1 2026 is a Thursday, day 244, 243 mod 7 = 5, Thu + 5 = Tue), 365 days later is +1 weekday = Wednesday.
Example 2. Inputs:
- Count from: August 15, 2026
Results:
- Days until September 1: 17 days
- Next September 1: Tuesday, September 1, 2026
- Weeks and days: 2 weeks, 3 days
How this is worked out: Aug 15 to Aug 31 is 16 days, plus 1 to reach Sept 1 = 17. Sept 1 2026 is a Tuesday (see above).
Example 3. Inputs:
- Count from: September 1, 2026
Results:
- Days until September 1: 0 days
- Next September 1: Tuesday, September 1, 2026
- Weeks and days: 0 weeks, 0 days
- Note: September 1 is the day you picked, so there are 0 days to go.
How this is worked out: On the date itself the count is 0 and it is not rolled to next year.
Example 4. Inputs:
- Count from: September 2, 2026
Results:
- Days until September 1: 364 days
- Next September 1: Wednesday, September 1, 2027
- Weeks and days: 52 weeks, 0 days
How this is worked out: One day after Sept 1 2026; a year (365 days, no Feb 29 between) from Sept 1 2026 to Sept 1 2027 minus 1 day = 364.
Where this comes from
The next time a month and day comes round. Finds the next time a month and day comes round, on or after the start date. If the start date is that day, there are 0 days to go. A February 29 date is observed on February 28 in a year that is not a leap year. Source: The Gregorian calendar: month lengths and the leap year rule (every fourth year, except century years not divisible by 400).
Limitations
- Counts to September 1 only, each year. An event held on a nearby weekday or weekend instead is not accounted for.
- Counts whole calendar days and ignores time zones and the time of day.
- Uses the Gregorian calendar for every date, for years 1 to 9999.

- Q: What if September 1 has already passed this year?
