How Many Days Until May?

Count the days left until May 1, from today or any date you choose. After May 1 it counts to May 1 of the next year.

What this tool does

Count the days left until May 1, from today or any date you choose. After May 1 it counts to May 1 of the next year. You fill in these fields: Count from. It shows days until May 1, next May 1, and weeks and days.

Inputs

  • Count from: A date. Starts as today's date. Defaults to today. Change it to count from another day.

How to use

  1. Pick a date for "Count from".
  2. Read the result: days until May 1, next May 1, and weeks and days. It appears once every required field has a valid value.

Worked examples

Example 1. Inputs:

  • Count from: April 15, 2026

Results:

  • Days until May 1: 16 days
  • Next May 1: Friday, May 1, 2026
  • Weeks and days: 2 weeks, 2 days

How this is worked out: April 15 to April 30 is 15 days, and one more day reaches May 1: 15 + 1 = 16.

Example 2. Inputs:

  • Count from: May 1, 2026

Results:

  • Days until May 1: 0 days
  • Next May 1: Friday, May 1, 2026
  • Weeks and days: 0 weeks, 0 days
  • Note: May 1 is the day you picked, so there are 0 days to go.

How this is worked out: The chosen day is May 1 itself, so the count is 0 and the date does not move to next year.

Example 3. Inputs:

  • Count from: May 2, 2026

Results:

  • Days until May 1: 364 days
  • Next May 1: Saturday, May 1, 2027
  • Weeks and days: 52 weeks, 0 days

How this is worked out: May 1 2026 is gone, so the target is 2027-05-01. 2026-05-02 to 2027-05-02 is 365 days (no Feb 29 in between); May 1 is one day earlier: 365 - 1 = 364.

Example 4. Inputs:

  • Count from: April 30, 2026

Results:

  • Days until May 1: 1 day
  • Next May 1: Friday, May 1, 2026
  • Weeks and days: 0 weeks, 1 day

How this is worked out: April has 30 days, so the day after April 30 is May 1: 1 day. Jan 1 2026 is a Thursday and May 1 is 31 + 28 + 31 + 30 = 120 days later; 120 = 17 x 7 + 1, so May 1 2026 is a Friday.

Where this comes from

The next time a month and day comes round. Finds the next time a month and day comes round, on or after the start date. If the start date is that day, there are 0 days to go. A February 29 date is observed on February 28 in a year that is not a leap year. Source: The Gregorian calendar: month lengths and the leap year rule (every fourth year, except century years not divisible by 400).

Limitations

  • Counts to May 1 only, each year. An event held on a nearby weekday or weekend instead is not accounted for.
  • Counts whole calendar days and ignores time zones and the time of day.
  • Uses the Gregorian calendar for every date, for years 1 to 9999.
