Worked examples
Example 1. Inputs:
- Target date: December 25, 2026
- Count from: October 8, 2026
Results:
- Days until: 78 days
- Weeks and days: 11 weeks, 1 day
- Day of the week: Friday
How this is worked out: Oct 8 to Oct 31 = 23, Nov = 30, Dec 1 to Dec 25 = 25, total 23 + 30 + 25 = 78. 78 = 11 x 7 + 1. Weekday: Jan 1, 2026 is a Thursday and Oct 8 is 280 days later (280 = 40 x 7), so Oct 8 is a Thursday; 78 days later = 77 + 1 gives a Friday. Oct 8 to Oct 31 = 23, Nov = 30, plus 25 = 78. 78 = 11 x 7 + 1. Thursday + 1 = Friday.
Example 2. Inputs:
- Target date: October 8, 2026
- Count from: October 8, 2026
Results:
- Days until: 0 days
- Weeks and days: 0 weeks, 0 days
- Day of the week: Thursday
- Note: That date is the day you are counting from, so there are 0 days to go.
Example 3. Inputs:
- Target date: October 1, 2026
- Count from: October 8, 2026
Results:
- Days until: -7 days
- Weeks and days: 1 week, 0 days
- Day of the week: Thursday
- Note: That date has passed. It was 7 days before the date you are counting from. The weeks and days are that gap.
How this is worked out: Oct 1 is 7 days before Oct 8, so the signed count is -7 and the date is past. 7 = 1 week 0 days. Oct 1 is 7 days before Oct 8, so the signed count is -7. Oct 1 is 7 days before Oct 8, so the signed gap is -7.
Example 4. Inputs:
- Target date: January 1, 2027
- Count from: December 31, 2026
Results:
- Days until: 1 day
- Weeks and days: 0 weeks, 1 day
- Day of the week: Friday
How this is worked out: Reviewer: Jan 1 is the day after Dec 31, so 1 day. Weekday: Jan 1, 2026 is a Thursday and 2026 has 365 days = 52 weeks + 1 day, so Jan 1, 2027 is a Friday. Reviewer: the day after Dec 31 is Jan 1, 1 day on. 2026-12-25 is a Friday (78 days after Thursday 2026-10-08, 78 = 11 x 7 + 1), and Jan 1 is 7 days later, so also a Friday.
Where this comes from
Count the days until a date. The number of whole calendar days from the start date to the target date. It is 0 on the day itself and negative once the target date has passed. The start day is day zero. Source: The Gregorian calendar: month lengths and the leap year rule (every fourth year, except century years not divisible by 400).
Limitations
- Counts whole calendar days only. Time of day and time zones are not considered.
- Accepts dates from year 0001 to 9999 in the Gregorian calendar.
- Today's date is read from your device when the page loads.
FAQs
- Q: Does the count include the start day?
- A: No. The start day is day zero, so tomorrow is 1 day away and the start day itself is 0.
- Q: Can I count from a day other than today?
- A: Yes. Change the Count from date. It starts as today's date on your device.
- Q: What if the date has already passed?
- A: The count goes below zero and a note says so. For example -7 means the date was 7 days before the day you are counting from.
- Q: Are leap years counted?
- A: Yes. The count uses real calendar days, including February 29.
- Q: Are weekends and holidays taken out?
- A: No. Every calendar day is counted.
