What this tool does

Count the days and weeks from today, or any date you choose, to the first day of school. You fill in these fields: Count from and First day of school. It shows days until school starts, weeks, extra days, and school starts on.

Inputs

  • Count from: A date. Starts as today's date. Change it to count from another day.
  • First day of school: A date.

How to use

  1. Pick a date for "Count from".
  2. Pick a date for "First day of school".
  3. Read the result: days until school starts, weeks, extra days, and school starts on. It appears once every required field has a valid value.

Worked examples

Example 1. Inputs:

  • Count from: August 20, 2026
  • First day of school: September 8, 2026

Results:

  • Days until school starts: 19 days
  • Weeks: 2
  • Extra days: 5
  • School starts on: Tuesday, September 8, 2026

How this is worked out: Aug 20 to Aug 31 is 11 days, plus 8 more days to Sep 8 = 19 days. 19 = 2 x 7 + 5, so 2 weeks and 5 days.

Example 2. Inputs:

  • Count from: September 8, 2026
  • First day of school: September 8, 2026

Results:

  • Days until school starts: 0 days
  • Weeks: 0
  • Extra days: 0
  • School starts on: Tuesday, September 8, 2026
  • Note: School starts today.

Example 3. Inputs:

  • Count from: September 10, 2026
  • First day of school: September 8, 2026

Results:

  • Days until school starts: 2 days
  • Weeks: 0
  • Extra days: 2
  • School starts on: Tuesday, September 8, 2026
  • Note: That date has already passed. The number shown is how many days ago it was.

How this is worked out: Sep 8 is two days before Sep 10, so the signed count is -2.

Example 4. Inputs:

  • Count from: February 27, 2028
  • First day of school: March 1, 2028

Results:

  • Days until school starts: 3 days
  • Weeks: 0
  • Extra days: 3
  • School starts on: Wednesday, March 1, 2028

How this is worked out: 2028 is a leap year: Feb 27 to Feb 28 is 1, to Feb 29 is 2, to Mar 1 is 3.

Limitations

  • The tool counts whole calendar days. It does not tick down in hours and minutes.
  • It does not know your school's calendar, so enter the date yourself.
  • A date more than ten years before or after the start date is refused as a likely typo.

FAQs

Q: Does the count include the first day of school?
A: No. It counts the days between the two dates, so the day before school is 1 day.
Q: Can I count from a date other than today?
A: Yes. Change the Count from date.
Q: What if the date has passed?
A: The tool shows how many days ago it was and says it has passed.
