Passport Photo Sizer

Crop and resize photos to passport and visa dimensions for any country

What this tool does

Passport Photo Sizer is a free, browser-based tool that crops and resizes any photo to the exact dimensions required for passports, visas, and government ID documents in over 15 countries. It runs entirely in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device.

You upload a photo, select your country and document type, drag the crop box to frame your face correctly, then download a properly sized JPEG ready to print or upload to an official application portal.

The tool outputs images at 300 DPI resolution, the standard required by most passport agencies. Dimensions are shown in both millimeters and inches so you can verify them against official requirements before printing.

How to use

1. Choose your country and document type from the dropdown (for example, "United States — Passport / Visa" or "United Kingdom — Passport"). 2. Click "Upload Photo" or drag your photo onto the upload area. JPG, PNG, and WebP files are supported. 3. The tool automatically centers a square crop guide on your photo. Drag the guide to frame your face so it fills the upper portion of the crop area. 4. Use the Crop Size slider to make the crop area larger or smaller. 5. Click "Generate Passport Photo" to render the output at the correct pixel dimensions. 6. Review the preview and click "Download Photo" to save the file. 7. Print the downloaded file at the size specified for your document type.

Passport photo requirements

Each country publishes specific size requirements for passport and visa photos. Here are the most common standards:

**United States (2"x2" / 50.8x50.8mm)** The US passport photo must be 2x2 inches square, printed on matte or glossy paper. The head must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches from chin to top of head.

**United Kingdom (35x45mm)** UK passport photos must be 35mm wide and 45mm tall, with the head between 29mm and 34mm from chin to crown.

**EU / Schengen Visa (35x45mm)** Schengen visa applications require 35x45mm photos, identical to the UK standard, with a plain white or off-white background.

**Canada (50x70mm)** Canadian passport photos are larger than most at 50x70mm, with the head occupying 31mm to 36mm of the frame height.

**Australia (35x45mm)** Australian passport photos match the EU standard at 35x45mm with the head between 32mm and 36mm tall.

**India (35x35mm)** Indian passport photos are square at 35x35mm, with a plain white background required.

**China Visa (33x48mm)** Chinese visa applications use 33x48mm photos with a plain white background and the face covering 70-80% of the frame.

All countries require a neutral expression, eyes open, and a plain light-colored background. Check the official government website for your destination country for the most current requirements before submitting.

FAQs

Q: Is my photo uploaded to a server? A: No. All processing happens in your browser using the HTML Canvas API. Your photo never leaves your device and is never uploaded anywhere.

Q: What file formats can I upload? A: The tool accepts JPEG, PNG, and WebP files. Most phone cameras produce JPEG files which work perfectly. Very large files may take a moment to load but will still work correctly.

Q: What resolution does the downloaded photo have? A: The tool outputs photos at 300 DPI, which is the standard required by most passport agencies worldwide. For example, a US 2"x2" passport photo is output at 600x600 pixels (2 inches at 300 DPI).

Q: Can I use this for a visa application photo? A: Yes. The tool includes formats for the US visa, EU Schengen visa, and Chinese visa. Select the appropriate format from the dropdown and follow the same steps. Always verify the current requirements on the official embassy or consulate website before submitting.

Q: Why does my photo look square but my passport is not square? A: The crop tool always uses a square crop, but the output is then resized to the exact proportions required for your selected document. For non-square formats like the UK 35x45mm, the tool stretches the square crop to match the required aspect ratio.

Q: How do I know if my face is positioned correctly? A: Use the rule-of-thirds grid lines as a guide. Your eyes should fall roughly along the top horizontal grid line. Your face should fill most of the frame without being cut off at the top or sides. Most passport standards require the head to fill between 70% and 80% of the photo height.

Q: Can I use a photo taken on my phone? A: Yes. Photos taken with a modern smartphone have more than enough resolution for passport photos. For best results, take the photo in good lighting against a plain light background, and make sure the photo is in portrait or square orientation.

Q: Does the tool work on mobile devices? A: Yes. The crop area supports touch dragging on phones and tablets. Use one finger to drag the crop area to the correct position.

Q: Will the photo print at the right size? A: The downloaded file is sized correctly for 300 DPI printing. When printing, make sure your print software is set to print at 100% scale (not "fit to page") and that the printer resolution is set to 300 DPI or higher.

Q: Do I need to create an account or pay anything? A: No account is required and the tool is completely free. There are no watermarks on the downloaded photos.
