VA to kVA Calculator

Convert volt-amps (VA) to kilovolt-amps (kVA) for electrical equipment and power system sizing.

What this tool does

Convert volt-amps (VA) to kilovolt-amps (kVA) for electrical equipment and power system sizing. Type an amount in volt-amperes, choose the units, and the tool converts it to kilovolt-amperes. It offers 5 apparent power units and also shows the same amount in the others.

Inputs

  • Value: A number.
  • From: Choose one: Millivolt-ampere, Volt-ampere, Kilovolt-ampere, Megavolt-ampere, Gigavolt-ampere. Starts as Volt-ampere.
  • To: Choose one of the same 5 units as "From". Starts as Kilovolt-ampere.

How to use

  1. Enter the amount you want to convert.
  2. Choose the unit to convert from and the unit to convert to.
  3. Read the result: the converted amount and the same amount in the other units. It appears once every required field has a valid value.

Worked examples

Conversions from volt-amperes to kilovolt-amperes:

  • 1 VA = 0.001 kVA
  • 5 VA = 0.005 kVA
  • 10 VA = 0.01 kVA
  • 50 VA = 0.05 kVA
  • 100 VA = 0.1 kVA

Multiply the number of volt-amperes by 0.001 to get kilovolt-amperes. Both units are exact definitions, so 0.001 is the exact factor: 1 VA = 0.001 kVA.

Limitations

  • Converts apparent power between VA-based units only. It does not convert to watts, which needs a power factor.

FAQs

Q: How do I convert VA to kVA?
A: Enter the value, choose VA as the From unit and kVA as the To unit. The result and the other units in the list update immediately. To go the other way, swap the two units.
Q: How do I turn VA into kVA by hand?
A: Divide the VA figure by 1,000. For example, 5,000 VA is 5 kVA.
Q: Can I use this for UPS ratings?
A: It converts the unit only. A UPS usually carries a separate watt rating, which depends on its power factor and cannot be worked out from the VA figure alone.
