Plant Spacing Calculator

Calculate number of plants for a given area with customizable spacing grid

What this tool does

The Plant Spacing Calculator tells you exactly how many plants fit in a given garden bed, border, or planting area — using either a traditional square grid or a denser triangular (staggered) pattern.

Proper plant spacing improves airflow, reduces disease pressure, ensures each plant gets adequate water and nutrients, and creates the finished aesthetic you're aiming for.

How it calculates

**Square grid spacing:** Plants are arranged in a regular grid where each row and column is separated by the same distance.

\`\`\` Plants per row = floor(area width / spacing) Number of rows = floor(area length / spacing) Total plants = plants per row x number of rows \`\`\`

**Triangular (staggered) spacing:** Every other row is offset by half a spacing unit, allowing plants to nestle into the gaps of the row below. This is how nature packs spheres most efficiently.

\`\`\` Row spacing = plant spacing x sin(60 degrees) = spacing x 0.866 Number of rows = floor(area length / row_spacing) Total = alternate sum of full rows and offset rows \`\`\`

Triangular spacing fits approximately 15% more plants than square spacing for the same area.

Square vs triangular spacing

**Use square spacing when:** - Following a formal, geometric garden design - Working with vegetables in raised beds (easier to reach between rows) - Your plants need to be harvested or maintained from specific sides

**Use triangular spacing when:** - Planting ground covers, perennials, or ornamental grasses - Maximizing coverage and minimizing bare soil - Creating a natural-looking planting with no obvious row structure - Establishing a meadow or naturalistic planting

The triangular pattern is the default choice for mass plantings because it fills in faster and looks more natural.

How to use

1. Enter the width and length of your planting area (switch between feet and meters) 2. Enter your desired plant spacing (check the plant tag for recommended spacing) 3. Choose square or triangular grid pattern 4. The calculator shows total plant count, rows, and planting density

Plant spacing reference

Common spacing guidelines by plant type:

- **Annual flowers** (impatiens, petunias): 6-12 inches - **Perennial flowers** (coneflowers, salvia): 18-24 inches - **Ground covers** (creeping phlox, ajuga): 12-18 inches - **Ornamental grasses**: 24-36 inches - **Shrubs** (small to medium): 3-5 feet - **Vegetable transplants** (tomatoes): 18-36 inches - **Vegetable seeds** (lettuce, carrots): 2-6 inches

Always check the plant tag. Spacing recommendations account for the plant's mature spread, not its size at planting.

FAQs

Q: Should I use the spacing on the plant tag or closer together for faster coverage? A: Use the recommended spacing for long-term health. Crowding plants temporarily hides bare soil but leads to competition for water, nutrients, and light, and increases disease pressure. For faster coverage, use the triangular pattern instead of square, which fills in without overcrowding.

Q: My garden bed isn't a perfect rectangle. How do I use this? A: Calculate the approximate square footage of your bed (length x average width) and use that to compare with the calculator output. For L-shaped or curved beds, break them into sections and calculate each separately.

Q: How do I convert this to a plant order quantity? A: Add 10-15% to your calculated total to account for transplant mortality, damaged plants at the nursery, or filling in gaps next season.

Q: Does spacing affect watering? A: Yes. Tighter spacing means plants' root zones overlap, competing for moisture. Wider spacing is more drought-tolerant per plant but leaves more bare soil that dries out faster. Triangular spacing at the recommended distance is usually optimal.
