Moving Box Estimator

Estimate the number of small, medium, large, and wardrobe boxes needed based on home size

What this tool does

The Moving Box Estimator helps you figure out how many packing boxes you need before a residential move. Rather than guessing at the store or making multiple trips for more supplies, this tool provides a reliable breakdown of small, medium, large, and wardrobe boxes based on the size of your home, the number of people living there, and how much stuff you have accumulated.

The estimate covers four standard box types used by professional movers. Small boxes (approximately 1.5 cubic feet) are designed for heavy items like books, canned goods, and tools. Medium boxes (approximately 3.0 cubic feet) handle kitchen items, small appliances, and general belongings. Large boxes (approximately 4.5 cubic feet) are best for lightweight bulky items such as linens, pillows, and lampshades. Wardrobe boxes include a built-in hanging bar so clothes can stay on hangers during the move.

How it calculates

The estimator uses a three-factor model to produce its box count:

**Base estimate by home size:** - Studio: 15-25 boxes - 1 Bedroom: 25-40 boxes - 2 Bedrooms: 40-60 boxes - 3 Bedrooms: 60-80 boxes - 4 Bedrooms: 80-100 boxes - 5+ Bedrooms: 100-130 boxes

**Clutter level adjustment:** - Minimalist: 30% reduction (0.7x multiplier) - Average: no adjustment (1.0x multiplier) - Lots of stuff: 40% increase (1.4x multiplier)

**Occupant adjustment:** Each additional occupant beyond the default for that home size adds approximately 10% more boxes.

**Box type distribution:** The total is split into roughly 30% small, 35% medium, 25% large, and 10% wardrobe boxes. This distribution reflects industry averages for typical household contents.

Packing tips

Getting the right number of boxes is only the first step. Follow these guidelines to make packing easier and protect your belongings during the move.

**Use the right box for the job.** Heavy items like books and dishes go in small boxes. Filling a large box with books makes it dangerously heavy and difficult to carry. Reserve large boxes for lightweight items such as pillows, comforters, and stuffed animals.

**Add a buffer.** Order 10-15% more boxes than the estimate suggests. It is better to have a few unused boxes than to run out mid-pack. Most moving supply stores accept returns on unused boxes.

**Label every box.** Write the room destination and a brief description of the contents on at least two sides of each box. This speeds up unloading and helps movers place boxes in the correct rooms.

**Fill empty space.** Partially filled boxes crush and shift during transit. Use packing paper, towels, or clothing to fill gaps and prevent damage.

FAQs

Q: How accurate is this estimate? A: The estimate is based on industry averages used by professional moving companies. It provides a reliable starting point, though individual results may vary depending on the types of belongings you own. Adding a 10-15% buffer is always recommended.

Q: What size are the boxes in this estimate? A: Small boxes are approximately 1.5 cubic feet (16 x 12 x 12 inches), medium boxes are approximately 3.0 cubic feet (18 x 18 x 16 inches), large boxes are approximately 4.5 cubic feet (18 x 18 x 24 inches), and wardrobe boxes are tall boxes with a built-in hanging bar for clothes.

Q: Do I really need wardrobe boxes? A: Wardrobe boxes are optional but highly recommended for suits, dresses, coats, and other hanging garments. They prevent wrinkles and keep clothes clean during the move. If you have very few hanging clothes, you can reduce the wardrobe count and add a few extra medium boxes instead.

Q: What if I have a garage, attic, or storage unit full of items? A: This estimator covers typical household contents. If you have significant additional storage areas, consider selecting a higher clutter level or adding 20-30% more boxes to your total.

Q: Can I reuse boxes from a previous move or grocery store? A: Reusing boxes is a great way to save money and reduce waste. Make sure reused boxes are still sturdy with no tears or water damage. Grocery store produce boxes are often a good free option for lighter items.

Q: How many rolls of packing tape will I need? A: A general rule is one roll of packing tape for every 10-15 boxes. For a typical 2-bedroom move, plan on 4-6 rolls.
