Money Counter

Count bills and coins by denomination to get a total cash amount quickly

What this tool does

The Money Counter lets you tally up physical cash by entering how many of each bill and coin denomination you have. As you type, the total updates instantly so you always see your running balance. No calculator arithmetic needed.

It handles all standard US currency denominations: \$100, \$50, \$20, \$10, \$5, \$2, and \$1 bills, plus \$1 coins, half dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. The tool shows you a grand total, a bills subtotal, a coins subtotal, and the total number of items counted.

How to use

1. Find the denomination you want to count in the Bills or Coins section. 2. Enter the number of bills or coins you have of that denomination. 3. The row immediately shows the subtotal for that denomination (count × face value). 4. The hero total at the top updates instantly to reflect your full count. 5. Continue entering counts for any other denominations you have. 6. When you are done, the grand total shows your complete cash amount. 7. Use the Clear All button to reset every field back to zero and start a new count.

Common use cases

**Cash register balancing**: Retailers and cashiers use the tool to count the drawer at the start or end of a shift. Enter how many of each denomination you pulled from the till to verify the drawer matches the expected amount.

**Piggy bank counting**: Empty a piggy bank or coin jar and count each denomination separately. The tool adds it all up so you know exactly how much you saved.

**Envelope budgeting**: If you use a cash envelope system, count the bills in each envelope to verify the balance matches your budget category.

**Garage sales and fundraisers**: Count your earnings at the end of a sale or event by sorting bills and coins into piles and entering the stack counts.

**Coin rolls**: Count loose coins before rolling them. Enter your coin totals to confirm you have the right amount before rolling.

**Travel planning**: Count foreign currency exchanged into US dollars to know exactly what you have available for spending.

FAQs

Q: Does the total update automatically, or do I need to click a button? A: The total updates automatically as you type. There is no calculate button. Every change to a count field immediately recalculates the bills subtotal, coins subtotal, and grand total.

Q: What if I accidentally type a negative number? A: The tool enforces a minimum of zero for all fields. If you enter a negative value it will be treated as zero, so your totals will always reflect real physical counts.

Q: Does the tool save my counts between visits? A: Counts are not saved between sessions. When you close or refresh the page the fields reset to zero. Use the tool for a quick count session, note your total, and clear when done.

Q: Can I count currency other than US dollars? A: The denominations shown are standard US currency. The math works the same for any decimal currency system where coins and bills share a base unit. Enter counts for whichever denominations match your currency.

Q: What is the \$2 bill denomination? A: The \$2 bill is a genuine US denomination still in circulation, though relatively uncommon. The tool includes it so your count is accurate if you happen to have any \$2 bills on hand.

Q: How does the tool handle floating point rounding for coins? A: Coin values like dimes (\$0.10) and pennies (\$0.01) can produce floating point rounding errors in standard arithmetic. The tool rounds all coin subtotals to the nearest cent so your total is always an accurate dollar-and-cents figure.
