Megajoule Converters

Convert megajoules to and from joules, kilowatt-hours, calories, BTU, therms and other energy units.

What this tool does

Convert megajoules to and from joules, kilowatt-hours, calories, BTU, therms and other energy units. Type an amount in megajoules, choose the units, and the tool converts it to kilowatt-hours. It offers 14 energy units and also shows the same amount in the others.

Inputs

  • Value: A number.
  • From: Choose one from 14 options, including Megajoule, Joule, Kilojoule, Gigajoule, Calorie (thermochemical), Kilocalorie (thermochemical). Starts as Megajoule.
  • To: Choose one of the same 14 units as "From". Starts as Kilowatt-hour.

How to use

  1. Enter the amount you want to convert.
  2. Choose the unit to convert from and the unit to convert to.
  3. Read the result: the converted amount and the same amount in the other units. It appears once every required field has a valid value.

Worked examples

Conversions from megajoules to kilowatt-hours:

  • 1 MJ ≈ 0.277778 kWh
  • 5 MJ ≈ 1.388889 kWh
  • 10 MJ ≈ 2.777778 kWh
  • 50 MJ ≈ 13.888889 kWh
  • 100 MJ ≈ 27.777778 kWh

Multiply the number of megajoules by about 0.277778 to get kilowatt-hours. The factor follows from exact definitions. It has more digits than fit here, so it is shown rounded.

Limitations

  • Converts units of energy only. It does not work out energy from power, time, voltage or charge.
  • Fuel equivalents such as litres of gasoline or diesel are not converted here.

FAQs

Q: How many kilowatt-hours are in one megajoule?
A: One megajoule is about 0.27777778 kilowatt-hours. Change the value to convert any amount; the other units are listed below the result.
Q: Which definition of the units does this page use?
A: Calories here are thermochemical calories (1 cal = 4.184 J exactly), the definition commonly used in chemistry and nutrition. The International Table calorie (4.1868 J) is slightly larger. BTU here is the International Table BTU (about 1055.06 J), the usual definition for heating and cooling. The thermochemical BTU is slightly smaller. Two therms are listed: the US therm (105.4804 MJ) and the EC therm (105.506 MJ, very nearly 100,000 BTU).
Q: Can I convert from kilowatt-hours to megajoules?
A: Yes. Choose kilowatt-hour in the From box and megajoule in the To box. One kilowatt-hour is 3.6 megajoules.
