What this tool does
Convert mass flux density (mass flow per unit area) between kg/(m²·s), kg/(m²·h), g/(cm²·s), lb/(ft²·s), lb/(ft²·h) and other units. Type an amount in kilograms per square meter second, choose the units, and the tool converts it to pounds per square foot hour. It offers 8 mass flux (mass flow per area) units and also shows the same amount in the others.
Inputs
- Value: A number.
- From: Choose one: Kilogram per square meter second, Kilogram per square meter minute, Kilogram per square meter hour, Gram per square meter second, Gram per square centimeter second, Pound per square foot second, Pound per square foot minute, Pound per square foot hour. Starts as Kilogram per square meter second.
- To: Choose one of the same 8 units as "From". Starts as Pound per square foot hour.
How to use
- Enter the amount you want to convert.
- Choose the unit to convert from and the unit to convert to.
- Read the result: the converted amount and the same amount in the other units. It appears once every required field has a valid value.
Worked examples
Conversions from kilograms per square meter second to pounds per square foot hour:
- 1 kg/(m²·s) ≈ 737.338117 lb/(ft²·h)
- 5 kg/(m²·s) ≈ 3,686.690585 lb/(ft²·h)
- 10 kg/(m²·s) ≈ 7,373.38117 lb/(ft²·h)
- 50 kg/(m²·s) ≈ 36,866.905852 lb/(ft²·h)
- 100 kg/(m²·s) ≈ 73,733.811704 lb/(ft²·h)
Multiply the number of kilograms per square meter second by about 737.338117 to get pounds per square foot hour. The factor follows from exact definitions. It has more digits than fit here, so it is shown rounded.

Limitations
- Converts the unit of a mass flux only. It does not work out a flux from a flow rate and an area, or from a density and a velocity.
- Covers mass per area per time. Mass flow rate (mass per time) and molar flux (moles per area per time) are different quantities and are not offered.
FAQs
- Q: How many lb/(ft²·h) is one kg/(m²·s)?
- A: About 737.34 pounds per square foot hour. One pound per square foot is about 4.8824 kg/m², and an hour is 3,600 seconds, so 3,600 divided by 4.8824 gives the figure.
- Q: How many kg/(m²·s) is one g/(cm²·s)?
- A: Exactly 10 kg/(m²·s). A gram is one thousandth of a kilogram and a square centimeter is one ten-thousandth of a square meter.
- Q: What is mass flux density?
- A: It is the mass passing through a surface per unit area per unit time, for example kilograms per square meter each second. It is also called mass flux or mass velocity.
- Q: Which pound and foot are used?
- A: The international avoirdupois pound (0.45359237 kg) and the international foot (0.3048 m).
