Kilowatt-hour Converters

Convert kilowatt-hours (kWh) to and from other energy units including joules, BTU, calories, and more.

What this tool does

Convert kilowatt-hours (kWh) to and from other energy units including joules, BTU, calories, and more. Type an amount in kilowatt-hours, choose the units, and the tool converts it to megajoules. It offers 12 energy units and also shows the same amount in the others.

Inputs

  • Value: A number.
  • From: Choose one from 12 options, including Kilowatt-hour, Watt-hour, Megawatt-hour, Joule, Kilojoule, Megajoule. Starts as Kilowatt-hour.
  • To: Choose one of the same 12 units as "From". Starts as Megajoule.

How to use

  1. Enter the amount you want to convert.
  2. Choose the unit to convert from and the unit to convert to.
  3. Read the result: the converted amount and the same amount in the other units. It appears once every required field has a valid value.

Worked examples

Conversions from kilowatt-hours to megajoules:

  • 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ
  • 5 kWh = 18 MJ
  • 10 kWh = 36 MJ
  • 50 kWh = 180 MJ
  • 100 kWh = 360 MJ

Multiply the number of kilowatt-hours by 3.6 to get megajoules. Both units are exact definitions, so 3.6 is the exact factor: 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ.

Sources: Kilowatt-hour: exact by definition. Megajoule: SI Brochure, 9th edition (2019, updated 2022), Table 7 (SI prefixes).

Limitations

  • Converts units of energy only. It does not work out energy from power, time, voltage or charge.

FAQs

Q: How many megajoules are in one kilowatt-hour?
A: One kilowatt-hour is 3.6 megajoules. Change the value to convert any amount; the other units are listed below the result.
Q: Which definition of the units does this page use?
A: Calories here are thermochemical calories (1 cal = 4.184 J exactly), the definition commonly used in chemistry and nutrition. The International Table calorie (4.1868 J) is slightly larger. BTU here is the International Table BTU (about 1055.06 J), the usual definition for heating and cooling. The thermochemical BTU is slightly smaller. The therm shown is the EC therm (105.506 MJ, very nearly 100,000 BTU).
Q: Can I convert from megajoules to kilowatt-hours?
A: Yes. Choose megajoule in the From box and kilowatt-hour in the To box. One megajoule is about 0.27777778 kilowatt-hours.
