Kilovolt Converters

Convert kilovolts to volts, millivolts, megavolts and other voltage units.

What this tool does

Convert kilovolts to volts, millivolts, megavolts and other voltage units. Type an amount in kilovolts, choose the units, and the tool converts it to volts. It offers 10 voltage units and also shows the same amount in the others.

Inputs

  • Value: A number.
  • From: Choose one from 10 options, including Gigavolt, Megavolt, Kilovolt, Volt, Millivolt, Microvolt. Starts as Kilovolt.
  • To: Choose one of the same 10 units as "From". Starts as Volt.

How to use

  1. Enter the amount you want to convert.
  2. Choose the unit to convert from and the unit to convert to.
  3. Read the result: the converted amount and the same amount in the other units. It appears once every required field has a valid value.

Worked examples

Conversions from kilovolts to volts:

  • 1 kV = 1,000 V
  • 5 kV = 5,000 V
  • 10 kV = 10,000 V
  • 50 kV = 50,000 V
  • 100 kV = 100,000 V

Multiply the number of kilovolts by 1,000 to get volts. Both units are exact definitions, so 1,000 is the exact factor: 1 kV = 1,000 V.

Limitations

  • Converts the unit of a voltage only. It does not work out voltage from current, resistance or power.
  • Abvolt and statvolt are historical CGS units, listed for completeness.

FAQs

Q: How many volts is one kilovolt?
A: One kilovolt is 1,000 volts. Pick kilovolt as the From unit and volt as the To unit to see it for any value.
Q: Can I convert the other way, from volts to kilovolts?
A: Yes. Choose volt in the From box and kilovolt in the To box. One volt is 0.001 kilovolt.
Q: What are abvolts and statvolts?
A: They are voltage units of the older CGS electromagnetic and electrostatic systems. One abvolt is exactly 0.00000001 volt (10⁻⁸ V). One statvolt is about 299.792458 volts.
