Kilonewton Converters

Convert kilonewtons to newtons, pounds-force, kips and other force units.

What this tool does

Convert kilonewtons to newtons, pounds-force, kips and other force units. Type an amount in kilonewtons, choose the units, and the tool converts it to newtons. It offers 14 force units and also shows the same amount in the others.

Inputs

  • Value: A number.
  • From: Choose one from 14 options, including Millinewton, Newton, Kilonewton, Meganewton, Dyne, Sthene. Starts as Kilonewton.
  • To: Choose one of the same 14 units as "From". Starts as Newton.

How to use

  1. Enter the amount you want to convert.
  2. Choose the unit to convert from and the unit to convert to.
  3. Read the result: the converted amount and the same amount in the other units. It appears once every required field has a valid value.

Worked examples

Conversions from kilonewtons to newtons:

  • 1 kN = 1,000 N
  • 5 kN = 5,000 N
  • 10 kN = 10,000 N
  • 50 kN = 50,000 N
  • 100 kN = 100,000 N

Multiply the number of kilonewtons by 1,000 to get newtons. Both units are exact definitions, so 1,000 is the exact factor: 1 kN = 1,000 N.

Limitations

  • Converts a force from one unit to another. It does not work out force from mass and acceleration.
  • Kilogram-force, tonne-force, pound-force and ounce-force are gravitational units, defined with standard gravity of 9.80665 m/s2. They measure a force, not a mass.

FAQs

Q: How many pounds-force is one kilonewton?
A: One kilonewton is about 224.81 pounds-force, or about 0.2248 kip. Pick kilonewton as the From unit and pound-force as the To unit to see it for any value.
Q: What is a kip?
A: A kip is 1000 pounds-force, used in US structural engineering. This page shows it as the kip, and the short ton-force (2000 lbf) and long ton-force (2240 lbf) as separate units.
Q: Is a tonne-force the same as a kilonewton?
A: No. One metric tonne-force is 1000 kilograms-force, exactly 9.80665 kilonewtons.
