Worked examples

Example 1. Inputs:

  • Your text: "Hello"
  • Style: Fraktur

Results:

  • Letters changed: 5
  • Characters left as typed: 0

How this is worked out: Unicode chart 1D400: Fraktur small letters start at U+1D51E (a), so e = U+1D51E + 4 = U+1D522, l = + 11 = U+1D529, o = + 14 = U+1D52C. Capital H has no slot in the Fraktur block and uses U+210C. 5 letters changed, 0 kept.

Example 2. Inputs:

  • Your text: "Zoë, ok?"
  • Style: Fraktur

Results:

  • Letters changed: 4
  • Characters left as typed: 4
  • Note: Only the letters A to Z are changed. Numbers, punctuation, spaces and accented letters stay as typed.

How this is worked out: Z uses U+2128, o = U+1D52C, k = U+1D51E + 10 = U+1D528. The text has 8 characters: Z o e-diaeresis comma space o k question mark. Letters changed: Z, o, o, k = 4. Kept as typed: the accented e, comma, space, question mark = 4.

Example 3. Inputs:

  • Your text: "Abc 12"
  • Style: Bold Fraktur

Results:

  • Letters changed: 3
  • Characters left as typed: 3
  • Note: Only the letters A to Z are changed. Numbers, punctuation, spaces and accented letters stay as typed.

How this is worked out: Bold Fraktur capitals start at U+1D56C (A), small letters at U+1D586 (a), with no gaps: b = U+1D587, c = U+1D588. 6 characters: 3 letters changed; the space, 1 and 2 are kept.

Example 4. Inputs:

  • Your text: "Zoë"
  • Style: Fraktur

Results:

  • Letters changed: 2
  • Characters left as typed: 1
  • Note: Only the letters A to Z are changed. Numbers, punctuation, spaces and accented letters stay as typed.

How this is worked out: Herethe last letter is typed as a plain e followed by the separate accent mark U+0308, which is how some systems store an accented letter. It is one accented letter on screen, so it is kept as typed, accent and all. Z = U+2128, o = U+1D52C: 2 changed, 1 kept.

Limitations

  • Only the letters A to Z are converted. Accented and non-Latin letters are left as typed.
  • The result is made of special Unicode characters, not a font. Screen readers may not read it, and not every app can display it.
  • The tool does not use the Old English or Gothic blackletter typefaces, only the Unicode Fraktur letters.

FAQs

Q: Which letters are changed?
A: The 26 letters A to Z in capitals and small letters. Numbers, punctuation, spaces, line breaks and accented letters stay as you typed them.
Q: Why do a few capitals look different in the Fraktur style?
A: Unicode encoded the capitals C, H, I, R and Z of the Fraktur alphabet earlier, in a different block. The tool uses those characters, so they come from a different part of the Unicode table. Some fonts draw them a little differently from the other capitals.
Q: Will the result work everywhere?
A: It is ordinary Unicode text, so you can paste it into most apps and sites. Some fonts, older systems and screen readers do not show or read these characters, and some sites strip them.
Q: What is the difference between Fraktur and Bold Fraktur?
A: They are two separate sets of Unicode characters with the same letter shapes. Bold Fraktur is heavier.
