Convert bits to bytes, kilobits, megabits, gigabits, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and other digital data units. Type an amount in bits, choose the units, and the tool converts it to bytes. It offers 12 data storage units and also shows the same amount in the others.

  • Value: A number.
  • From: Choose one from 12 options, including Bit, Byte, Kilobit, Kilobyte, Megabit, Megabyte. Starts as Bit.
  • To: Choose one of the same 12 units as "From". Starts as Byte.

How to use

  1. Enter the amount you want to convert.
  2. Choose the unit to convert from and the unit to convert to.
  3. Read the result: the converted amount and the same amount in the other units. It appears once every required field has a valid value.

Worked examples

Conversions from bits to bytes:

  • 1 bit = 0.125 B
  • 5 bit = 0.625 B
  • 10 bit = 1.25 B
  • 50 bit = 6.25 B
  • 100 bit = 12.5 B

Multiply the number of bits by 0.125 to get bytes. Both units are exact definitions, so 0.125 is the exact factor: 1 bit = 0.125 B.

Limitations

  • Converts amounts of data. It does not turn a size into a transfer time or a speed into a size.
  • The kilo, mega and giga units here are decimal (powers of 1000). Binary units such as kibibit and mebibyte are separate units, listed on the Kilobit Converters page.

FAQs

Q: How many bits are in a byte?
A: A byte is 8 bits. Choose bit as the From unit and byte as the To unit to convert any value.
Q: How many bits are in a kilobit?
A: One kilobit is 1000 bits in the decimal (SI) system used here. The binary kibibit is 1024 bits and is a separate unit.
Q: What is the difference between a megabit and a megabyte?
A: A megabyte is 8 megabits, so 1 megabyte = 8 megabits. Network speeds are usually quoted in bits and file sizes in bytes.
